不要让你的词汇量过早地被你的高中英语老师剧透了！

在课堂上，能加s的基本就两类单词，

一是名词的复数，如wings，steps，kids等；

另一个是动词的单数第三人称，如takes，says，guesses等。

举个栗子，英语中有个短语叫twists and turns，两个单词都是转弯的意思，更常用的是它的引申义---“曲折”，具体例句在下面会提到；

再举个栗子，apples and oranges，意思是“苹果和橙子”当然没错，不过，既然是短语，那就有另外一个意思，见以下视频：

当然，它们也是作为名词来使用的。

1. dos and don'ts

do是“做”，don't是不做，所以整个短语意思就是“能做与不能做的事情”，即“注意事项”或者“行为准则”。

🌰：It's difficult traveling to new countries as it takes a while to learn all their cultural dos and don'ts.

去从没去过的国家旅行是不容易的，因为要花好长时间去了解它们的风俗文化。

把盘子里的所有食物都吃了

不要把它们放在你的头发里

2. ups and downs

字面意思：上上下下

引申义：起起落落，坎坷

3. ins and outs

字面意思：里面与外面

引申义：细节，里里外外的情况

🌰：It took him 3 weeks to learn the ins and outs of the whole process.

他花了三周的时间了解两类整个流程的细节。

4. ifs and buts

字面意思：如果与但是

引申义：遁词，推脱

说话如果用到太多的if和but，那是一件多么令人厌烦的事，总感觉不够自信，靠不住，无诚意。

既然有这么多的托词和不确定因素，最好还是静观其变吧。

5. pros and cons

字面意思：赞成与反对

引申义：利与弊

🌰：We weighed up the pros and cons before making the decision.

在做决定之前，我们权衡了利与弊。

6. p's and q's

字面意思：p和q

引申义：注意事项

因为小学生很容易把p和q两个字母混淆，所以，老师要经常提醒他们注意。进而有了“注意事项”和“言行”之意。

第一印象很重要，所以，你要注意自己的言行举止。

7. haves and have nots

字面意思：有的和没有的

引申义：富人和穷人

8. rights and wrongs

字面意思：对与错

引申义：功过，是非曲直
