Why do I feel so much affection for you when I have lost my memory?
By: Maidong (麦冬)*
It feels as if spring is here
It feels as if the peach trees have just blossomed
It feels as if Gangbo Ciren has just left
On the snow-capped mountains it is still snowing
I dream
You have lost your red scarf
You seem to be walking down the street
You seem to be saying
I still know my name
My name is not Yunyan
My name is not Qianqian
Those colours you like
Are still on display in colourful fabric shops
Still retaining their air of simplicity
I still remember
Your name
But I am unable to cry out to you
I often compare you to a flower
But each time a flower falls
My body is racked with pain
* Maidong is the dwarf lilyturf (Ophiopogon japonicus) which is used in Chinese medicine
Translator: Romaine
Notes
Line 3: Gangbo Ciren is a living Buddha
Lines 10, 11: Yunyan might be translated as Misty; Qianqian as Verdant
