1) hold water
【含义】找的借口或提出的理由是确实、站得住脚的
【例句】
Your explanation that you were at Andy’s doesn’t hold water because he came by last night looking for you!
你说你在安迪家的解释站不住脚,因为他昨晚来找你!
2) muddy the waters
【含义】把水搅浑,使变得更复杂
【例句】
We’d almost agreed on a plan and then Sarah suggested we invite a 5th person, which really muddied the waters.
我们几乎同意了一个计划,然后莎拉建议我们邀请第五个人,这真是把事情搞得一团糟。
3) come hell or high water
【含义】不管遇到什么困难
【例句】
Don’t worry! Come hell or high water I’ll make it to Hawaii for your wedding - even if I have to swim there.
别担心!不管怎样,我都要去夏威夷参加你的婚礼,即使我必须去那里游泳。
4) like a fish out of water
【含义】如鱼出水,不适应环境,感到生疏
【例句】
The first time I tried Zumba fitness I was so uncoordinated that I felt like a fish out of water, but now I’m good at it.

【例句】
The thought of my grandmother’s apple pie makes my mouth water.

Let's buy one of those cookies; they're making my mouth water.
我们买一块饼干吧,它们让我垂涎欲滴。
6) like a duck to water
【含义】如鱼得水,轻而易举
【例句】
She took to mothering like a duck to water.
她很快就对母亲这一角色驾轻就熟了。
My three oldest children learned to play the piano like ducks to water, but my youngest has zero musical talent.
我最大的三个孩子学会了弹钢琴,但我最小的孩子却毫无音乐天赋。
