farther和further到底有何差别？
英语中说到形容词和副词的比较级，一定会说到far这类词，因为它们同时存在两种不同形式的比较级。
对于far而言，它的两种比较级形式是：farther和further。这两种形式在用法上到底有何差别？我们今天就来梳理梳理。
一、相同点
farther和further都可以用作形容词和副词，也都可以用来表示“（物理意义上的距离）更远”。如：
1、farther
形容词：The farther hill is five kilometres away. （那座更远的小山在五公里以外。）
副词：We can't go any farther without a rest. （不休息我们就走不动了。）
2、further
形容词：The church is much further than you think. （教堂比你想象的远得多。）
副词：The hospital is further down the road. （医院在这条路上，再往前走就到了。）
二、不同点
其实，farther和further也可以都用来表示抽象意义上的“进一步”。但是，相比较而言，further更常用在这种场合下。
此时，further也既可以用作形容词，也可以用作副词。如：
形容词：Curiosity has incited him to go into further investigation. （好奇心激励他做进一步的调查研究。）
副词：I felt impelled to investigate the matter further. （我觉得自己有责任对事情作进一步调查。）
此外，当further用作副词时，还可以表示“此外，而且”。如：
He said that he could not find it, and further, that nobody would ever find it. （他说他无法找到它，而且也不会有人找到它。）
最后，further也可以用作动词，表示“推动；促进”。如：
Our visit to your country will certainly further the friendship between our two peoples. （我们对贵国的访问必将增进两国人民的友谊。）
