Brown led a raid on the arsenal and town of Harpers Ferry, VA. The raid was botched from the beginning and was ultimately suppressed by Virginia militia. Brown was captured and tried for treason against the state of Virginia for trying to start an armed slave rebellion and hanged the following year.
Why
significant
Brown had led another raid at Pottawattamie Creek in Kansas a few years before in which he and his sons murdered several local slave owners. He was an extremist abolitionist whose actions increased the tension between northern and southern states over the issue of slavery.
