TONG Zirong

TONG Zirong (1944-), native of Danyang in Jiangsu province, is a dubbing performance artist. In 1966 he graduated from the Department of Acting of Shanghai Theatre Academy and worked there after graduation. In 1973, he entered Shanghai Film Dubbing Studio to work as a dubbing actor, successively dubbing major roles in such dubbed films as Zorro, The Man in the Iron Mask, Tess, The Black Tulip, National Interest, Oh!

The Nomugi Pass, Sissi, The Slipper and The Rose, Mephisto, The Silent One, Moskva, Lyubov Moya, Die Hard With a Vengeance and A Walk in the Clouds. Among them, Tess, The Black Tulip and Mephisto in which he dubbed major roles were awarded Outstanding Dubbed Films respectively in 1982, 1985 and 1988 by Ministry of Culture or Ministry of Radio, Film and Television. Also he dubbed protagonists in TV series including Anna Karenina, Garrison’s Gorillas and others.

In recent years he dubbed for films like Toy Story, Storm Rider: Clash of the Evils, CUG: King of Heroes and others. The films and television series he has dubbed amount to nearly one thousand and therefore he is known as “Dubbing Prince”.

Dubbing“ Zorro”

TONG Zirong watched a lot of foreign films when he was in high school and was deeply moved by the charismatic voice of the dubbing actors. Therefore, he was determined to become an excellent dubbing actor. When he just entered Shanghai Film Dubbing Studio, he was not accustomed to dubbing work for a while, because his methods of reading lines which he learned in Shanghai Theatre Academy were characterized with a stage style and which did not satisfy the requirements of film dubbing. With tenacious willpower he insisted on practicing methods of reading lines of films every day and finally changed the recitation habit.

Six years after entering the dubbing studio in 1979, he dubbed two roles of Zorro and the fake governor in the film Zorro under the support of CHEN Xuyi, the elderly factory director. The opportunity did not easily come by and he particularly cherished it. On the small space outside the studio were left his footsteps when he paced back and forth to ponder. He was immersed heart and sole   in the understanding of roles, often forgetting to have meals and sleep. During the time for rest, he still held the script in his handsto read lines with great concentration, mumbling to oneself from time to time as if deep in thought. He could not only remember lines thoroughly by heart, but his voice was full of emotions based on roles as well.

With a voice on the basis of much practice, he interpreted roles to help the audience understand the story of films, guide them to understand the noble sentiment of heroes and bring them artistic appreciation. His magnetic voice was both vivid and full of appeal so that “Zorro”, a handsome swordsman with a black robe and a mask on his face, as well as a hero of justice, found his way into the hearts of the Chinese people.

To make a distinction between the two dubbed roles of Zorro and the false governor, he racked his brains for ideas and finally saw the light all of a sudden. When dubbing the fake governor with a cowardly personality and lazy incompetence, he would wear a pair of slippers. In contrast, Zorro was both firm and unyielding, and smart and handsome. When dubbing him, he put on a pair of shiny leather shoes. Wearing different shoes to dub two different roles, he said that he had a very delicate feeling when reading the lines.

The studio once invited Alain Delon, the actor who played the role of“Zorro”, to visit the studio and enjoy a fragment from the film Zorro where TONG Zirong shouldered the important task of dubbing. In the screening room, when the harsh world-class star heard that his original rough voice became gorgeous, a smile crossed the corner of his mouth. He appreciated the voice of TONG Zirong and reminded him with concern of protecting his throat which suffered from chronic pharyngitis.

Fine lines of time climbed onto his forehead, but the charm of the voice of the “Dubbing Prince” did not diminish any bit. He said that his biggest hobby in this life was dubbing.
