ANCIENT RULE OF CHINA

ANCIENT RULE OF CHINA

It is an ancient rule that man should be cautious in his speech. Please stick to the rule.
Do not talk too much for it often brings defeat. Do not take unessential action for it often cause trouble. Guard against indulgence in pleasure and do not do anything that may cause you remorse. Do not say it causes no harm, for it may bring protracted misfortune. Do not say it does not harm, for it may bring great catastrophe. Do not say it inflicts no injury, for the calamity may spread like prairie fire. Do not think your speech and actions go unknown, for both Heaven and evil spirits are watching you closely.
A small fire, if not put out in time, will turn into a blaze. A small stream, if not stopped, will turn into a big river. Tiny silk threads, if left unbroken, will turn into a net. A young sapling, if not felled in time, will grow into a big tree that cannot be cut down unless with an axe. Beware of the root of all troubles, and grasp the key to good fortune. An overbearing man will come to a sorry end, and a proud man will one day meet his rival. The robbers blame the robbed for being too wealthy, and the common people are all afraid of being rich. A superior man understands he cannot transcend the world, so he places himself in a lowly position, thereby winning admiration. Others may strive to be strong, but I assume a humble attitude, so no one will contend with me. Others may marvel at my behavior, but I persevere. Others may become doubtful, but I remain firm and steadfast. I conceal my talents from the world and do not compete with others. Even though I achieve honor, no one can bring me any harm.  The rivers are superior to the valleys because they assume a lowly position. Heaven is partial to no man, but men of benevolence will be blessed.
Bear this in mind! Bear this in mind!
