Bliss Killed in an Auto Accident

Who: Henry Bliss, a New York Real Estate broker.

What:

Mr. Bliss became the first person in the US to be killed in an automobile accident.  While disembarking from a street car he was struck by a passing cab and crushed.  While the driver was arrested for manslaughter, he was later released as there was no malicious intent or negligence on his part.

Why

significant

Mr Bliss may have been the first to die in a US auto accident, but he was not the last: on average there are 40,000 fatalities a year in the US resulting from automobile accidents with driver misplaced attention being a primary cause.
