从句是相对于主句而言的，即它是从属于某一个主句，而不能单独作一个句子。在英语中，主要有三大从句：名词性从句、定语从句和状语从句。这些从句的命名主要是根据从句在整个句子中所充当的句子成分来定的。

其中，名词性从句包括主语从句、表语从句、宾语从句和同位语从句。这些从句之所以被称作名词性从句，主要是因为它们在句中都起着名词的作用。

定语从句主要根据从句与先行词的关系分为限定性定语从句和非限定性定语从句。

状语从句根据其作用可分为时间、地点、原因、结果、目的、条件、方式、比较、让步九种。
