安东尼·约翰内斯·蒂姆(1888 – 1954)出生于荷兰港口城市鹿特丹。他曾在鹿特丹美术学院、海牙皇家学院学习。曾跟随德国杜塞尔多夫著名舞台设计师乔治·霍克和意大利印象派画家安东尼奥·曼奇尼的学习。完成学业后,蒂姆游历欧洲和南美洲,从事舞台设计工作以支持他的旅行费用。蒂姆于1917年首次来到美国,最初在纽约和波士顿担任布景设计师和图书插画家。

20世纪20年代末,蒂姆结婚并从波士顿搬到马萨诸塞州罗克波特,这是一个新兴的艺术殖民地。与其他洛克波特艺术家一样,他的风格受到印象派的影响,特别注重光的效果,但也受到荷兰海景画传统的影响。在他的整个职业生涯中,蒂姆喜欢在室外画画,因为这样可以更好地捕捉大自然中转瞬即逝的效果。因此,他被称为“光影大师”。
