Hong Kong BaptistUniversity Academy of Visual Arts 2020 Graduation Show (Sculpture)

Bluestone, steel

Size:350×253×247cm

Supervisor:Ekkehard Altenburger

Artwork Statement

One’s behaviours reflect one’sthinking; one’s actions reflect one’s beliefs. Instead ofindulging in daydreams, one needs to step out bravelyand determinedly, and strives to createinfinitepossibilities. Despite being inexperienced, one may liveout a unique side of life through the intertwiningfate.

In über-dream, the depicted child is wearing suoyi,a type oftraditional Chinese raincoat. In ancient times, children puton this thin raincoat in stormy and snowy weather. The choice of stone inthis work embodies the tenacity of achieving dreams and the spiritof fearless exploration. The geometric iron plates are madeof modern, industrial materials, yet it communicates the spirit ofdetermination and perseverance from ancient times, connecting with contemporary society, creating spacefor reflection upon our soul and life.

Mundane Existence is a series of herb brooches made from found electrical tubing waste. These brooches reference miscellaneous types of weed plants growing inunplanned areas in the city. Subtle as they are, their existence provides vitalhelp to various life forms, just like how electricity is essential to a city’sprosperity. By wearing them, not only can we admire them up close, but alsokeep them close to our hearts and be remind- ed to appreciate the significanceof the small things in our daily life.

Iron, glass, water
Dimensions variable

Artwork Statement

Memories are similar to puzzles. Peopleperceive images differently in their minds and form a “documentary” of theirexperiences. They believe what they remember is true and real. However, interfered by emotions and imagination, memories are not always as fresh asthey seems. The happiness you feel in the moment may somehow sugar-coat yourexperience. Who can tell whether the memories in their minds are not comingfrom their imagination?

名称 Title:《南山》 The southern hills

Fabrics dyed with pigments extracted from chrysanthemums

Dimension variable

Mr. Ng Siu King, Kingsley

Artwork Statement

The poet TAO Yuanming from eastern JinDynasty once wrote:‘From the eastern hedge, I pluck chrysanthemum flowers, andidly, I look towards the southern hills.’In the hustle and bustle of life, itis inevitable for most people to feel physically and mentally tired. Maybe onecannot escape from the reality like hermits, yet a distant heart tends towardslike places, where the‘southern hills’are located.

名称 Title:《源圓》 It’s all round

Engraving on window glass, window glass powder fired on porcelain

Supervisor:Ekkehard Altenburger

Artwork Statement:

‘Looking at those who come and go, I stop carry any emotions. Itis because I understand that we need to learn to embrace the contradictions asa human.’
“All Round” is inspired by Cathy AU Cheuk In’s personal growthexperience and the doubts about human nature. Habitually deceiving others andevading problems are human’s deep-rooted depravity. We always hope thateverything will be perfect. However, no matter how kind and sincere a personis, there are still lies, white lies. Only when we are in front of Gods andanimals, we are honest. The root of honesty builds on true acceptance of yourtrue self.
The sole way to accept your true self is by acknowledging yourdefection, being honest to your imperfection, and learning from yourexperiences. All experiences are part of the fragments for us to grow.
‘Cover with the powder from differentexperiences has taken away from you, and turn it into a shield to protectyourself and your honesty.’
