在八十天的小结中，我提到有个想法，以青少年英文演讲为学习英语表达的切入点，但因为完美主义倾向而迟迟未行动，今天，我将把背包扔过墙，先从不完美的开始，在行动中完善这个课程！

美国学者斯蒂芬·克拉生教授在他的著作《阅读的力量》中提出，自由自主阅读（Free Voluntary Reading）是提高语言能力最有效的手段，不论阅读的内容是通俗小说、青少年浪漫文学、报纸，还是经典文学著作，阅读这个行为本身都会在提高语言能力中起到关键作用。

今天我们以当时就读于北外附属苏州湾外国语学校初一的April同学的演讲“The Power of Reading"（阅读的力量）作为学习的开篇。这篇演讲共8分多钟，我把内容分为5个部分，每天学习其中一部分的语言表达。

After reading me books every night since I was about two, my mom opened a children’s book store. I still remember the day I stepped into the warm, lovely place, sunshine glowing on the bookshelves, and I smelled the scent of books.

从我大概两岁起，妈妈每晚为我读书，她开了一家儿童书店。我仍然记得那天，我走进那个温暖可爱的地方，阳光在书架上闪闪发光，我闻到了书香。

• since /sɪns/

  (adv.) 自从

  since+时间状语从句，表示自从……以来。

  Ever since, since then=from then on, 表示从那时起。

  I got my first job in 1973 and I’ve been working ever since. 1973年我得到了我的第一份工作，从那时起，我就一直从事这个工作。

• stepped /stept/

  (vi.) 踏，迈，走

  stepped是step的动词过去式，step into，踏入

  I stepped out of the building and immediately a bullet whistled past my head. 我一迈出大楼，一粒子弹从我头上呼啸而过。

• scent /sent/

  (n.)香气

  the scent of books 书香

  the scent of roses 玫瑰的芳香

However, the love of reading has been kept unchanged, except that I don’t suck my fingers anymore while I’m reading.

但是，我对读书的热爱没有改变，只是在读书时不再吮吸手指。

• except /ɪkˈsept/

  (prep.) 除了（不包括）……

  except that+从句，表示除了……

  The exam went pretty well, except that I misread the final question. 考试进行得很顺利，只是我误读了最后一道题。

Although running a bookstore is not always a good choice for making money, mom never regrets quitting her high-salary job and devoting herself to the small bookstore. She is very proud of her work that brings a passion for reading to me and other children.

尽管开一家书店并非总是赚钱的好选择，但妈妈从来不后悔辞掉高薪工作，投身于这家小书店。她为自己的工作而感到自豪，因为它给我和其他孩子们带来了阅读的热情。

• although /ɔːlˈðəʊ/

  （conjunction 连词）

  尽管…但是…，汉语中，尽管……但是……连用，但英语中表示转折，句子中只需出现一个连词，即用了although, 后面就不能用but。

  He decided to go, although I begged him not to. 尽管我恳求他不要走，但他执意要走。

• regret  /rɪˈɡret/

  (vt.) 后悔，遗憾，抱歉

  regret doing sth.后悔做过某事

  regret to do sth. 后悔要做某事

  I have always regretted not having studied harder at school. 我一直后悔上学的时候没有更努力。

• devote /dɪˈvoʊt/

  devote (oneself) to (doing) sth.投身于某件事

  注意to后面是动名词形式。

  He devoted his life to serving his family, friends, and neighbors.他一生都奉献给了他的家庭、朋友和邻居。

• proud /praʊd/

  (adj.) 自豪，骄傲（褒义）

  be proud of oneself/sth./doing sth. 为某人/某事/做某事而骄傲

  I'm so proud of being a Chinese. 我为自己是中国人而感到无比骄傲。
