直接和委婉，一个像夏天，一个像秋天。

东方也好，西方也罢，在人与人的交际中，都应该尽量避免令双方不快的言辞，取而代之的是迂回曲折的表达来进行交流。

1939年的经典影片《乱世佳人》曾因为白瑞德的那句“Frankly,my dear. I don't give a damn.",而饱受争议，在人们心目中的地位一度下降。

因此，委婉语就应运而生，它的出现把人类的文明意识提高到了一个新高度。

直接说法：die
委婉说法：pass away（去世）
be at peace（安详）
return to dust（归于尘土）
go to heaven（上天堂）
go west（去了西方）
be gone（去了）
be called home/by God（被召回）
breathe one's last（咽下最后一口气）
join one's ancestors（加入祖先行列）

缺陷 / 疾病

1. 关于人身体上缺陷的委婉说法，很多都可以用“副词+形容词”来表达。
矮（short）的委婉说法是：vertically challenged（垂直高度受限）；
智力较低（retarded）：intelligently challenged（智力受限）；
身体差（not healthy）：physically challenged（身体受限）；
瞎（blind）：visually retarded（视力滞后）
2. 胖（fat）：overweight
3. 丑（ugly）：plain 或 ordinary（普通的）
4. 瘦（thin）：slender / slim（苗条）
5. 老人（old man）：senior citizen（年长公民），elderly man（年长者）；
6. 怀孕(pregnant): expecting，in the family way
7. 癌症（cancer）：terminally ill

1. the heck 代替 the hell / f**k（他妈的）
🌰：What the heck are you?（你特么是谁？）
还有一种更经常的说法，把最后一个单词略去，欲言又止：What the ...?（什么鬼！）
2. Oh,fudge! 代替 Oh, f**k!
3. freaking 代替 f**king
4. darn 代替 damn（该死的）
5. break wind 代替 fart（放屁）
6. shoot /  代替 sh*t
7. son of a biscuit 代替 son of a b*tch

2. 说谎（lie）：not tell the truth，be economical with the truth
3. 解雇（unemploy/fire）：let sb go
4. 杀死一只动物（kill an animal）：put...down
5. 失业（unemployed）：laid off
6. 二手的（used）：previously enjoyed
7. 我已经有男/女朋友了！（I have a boy/girlfriend.)：I am not available.
8. 我不知道！（I don't know.)：I have no idea. / I don't have a clue.
9 随便。（Whatever.) ：Anything will do. / It's up to you.
10. 不用了！（No!)：I am good.
