The Texas Rangers existed as an informal institution as early as 1823 charged with the task of protecting new immigrants into the Mexican state of Texas from the US after Mexico won its independence from Spain and opened its northern borders to colonization.  The Rangers were tasked with protecting these pioneers from Comanches and other potentially hostile tribes.  The Rangers were formally instituted on this date in 1835 as an auxiliary force in the Texas war for independence from Mexico.

Why

significant

The Texas Rangers were dissolved after the Civil War but post Reconstruction were re-instated to serve as a state wide law enforcement and investigative agency with similar powers as the FBI on the federal level.  As of 2015, there are over 160 Texas Rangers in active service.
