English Version

Ode to Quanzhou

Tr. Wu Haohao

On hills high Saint Li Er does dwell.

Across the city rivers flow.

In the temples grand monks ring the bell.

Seagulls fly, pearls in the shells glow.

A cup of tea greets a nice day.

Pipes heard, folklores appeal to ears.

Arcades tall keep rainfalls away.

Coral flowers bloom over years.

Paraphrase

Located at the northern part of the city, the Qingyuan Mountain is an ideal tourist destination for its lush forestry, clear spring water, and a giant rock. Craftsmen carved the rock to a sitting statue of Laozi―a founder of Taoism, philosopher in the Spring and Autumn Period. Embraced by the trees and clouds, the statue looks grand and natural. It coincides with the doctrine advocated by Laozi that “Tao follows the nature”. The Jin River runs across the city from northwest to southeast. It is vast with rolling waves stirring up mists and steams. Far off the river, there stand many exquisite temples, like Kaiyuan Temple, Shaolin Temple and Chengtian Temple, etc. When the wind blows, the chant of Buddha is heard echoing among the mountains.Quanzhou Bay lies to the southeastern part of the city. It is a picturesque port with azure sky, blue waves and white sailboats. Seagulls fly over the water, crying for their companions. It is not only a home for birds but sea creatures. You may see pearls glistening in the sunshine when shellfish open their shells to take a breath.

As a starting point of the Maritime Silk Route, Quanzhou is called “a fable abode of sea immortals”. It is the place of origin to Tieguanyin tea. Anxi, one of its counties, produces the most precious tea of this sort. Whenever you come to Quanzhou, the local people will ask you to take a seat with them around the tea table. They will make tea for you and chat with you like long-lost friends. Beiguan, which is enlisted as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2006, is a traditional music widespread in Quanzhou Bay District. It is played by local musicians with stringed and woodwind musical instruments. As it has adopted some of the south Fujian music, Putian-Xianyou music and folksongs along the Yangze River and the Huai River, it sounds both gentle and melodious. The arcade buildings at the Zhongshan Road are well-known to southeasterners. The overhang is supported by pillars, thus forming a long corridor for people to shelter from rain. As the saying goes, “In the south, it rains cats and dogs. But beneath the arcade, one walks and jogs”, the arcade offers the local people much convenience. Quanzhou is home to many overseas Chinese. It can be seen frequently that people return to the city in search of their ancestral residence after many years living abroad. However, it is not easy for them to find their former home since great changes have taken place in Quanzhou. Therefore, they have to ask the passersby, “where is the Coral-flower village, a birthplace of my forefathers”?
