On the Cover: In the natural ecosystem, microorganisms mainly perform their functions and driving roles in the form of microbial communities, which maintain the structure, function and dynamic balance of the ecosystem at all levels. Microbiome research has become the high ground of global scientific and technological competition in human disease prevention and treatment, industrial and agricultural production, and environmental management, etc. With recent progress of microbiome studies, we have an initial knowledge of the composition of microbial communities in various ecosystems, but we are still far from a comprehensive understanding of their community dynamics and functions. The studies in this special issue will unveil microbial composition in diverse hosts and advance our knowledge of the relationship between the microbiome and host’s health, lifestyle, and physiology.
