What is going on, WeChat? It’s Chris here, coming at you with a brand new audio log.
Today I wanna talk about something really sad. And that’ll be the death of Yang Jiang.
Probably one of the most well-known intellectuals, Yang Jiang passed away at the age of 105 on May 25 in Beijing. And I think the most proper thing to do here at Test Daily is pay tribute to this wonderful scholar by getting to know her achievements, and her life.
Yang was born into a scholarly family, she graduated from Tsinghua University and majored in western literature. It was at this school that she met the love of her life, Qian Zhongshu. She studied at Oxford University with her husband between 1935 and 1938, after which the pair returned to China to teach at universities.
Her fame is attributed in part to her late husband, who was a famous writer and scholar with international influence. He was best known for his novel Fortress Besieged.
But Yang was a remarkable intellectual in her own right. Yang made great contributions to literature in China with her translations. She was the first to translate Don Quixote directly from Spanish into Chinese and it has been the most popular translation ever since.
After the death of her daughter and husband in 1997 and 1998, Yang recorded the experience of losing her two closest family members in her 2003 best-selling memoir We Three.
Yang was also philanthropic. She donated all of the money from these publications to Tsinghua University to set up a scholarship for hard-working, poor students, asking only for their diligent study in return for the generous funding. The scholarship was established has garnered donations exceeding 2 million yuan
That’s all for today’s episode. The best way to pay tribute to Yang is, of course, to read her works. And to be completely honest with you guys, I have never read any of them, but I’ve decided to include We Three in my reading list. Rest in peace, Yang. And WeChat, we’ll see you later.
