Diagnosis:  Poor fat saturation due to presence of right hip hardware with inadvertent CSF signal suppression inferiorly.

Because of its ferromagnetic properties, orthopedic hardware causes variations in the local magnetic field, resulting in alterations in the precessional frequencies of the neighboring tissues. The presence of hardware can lead to failure of fat saturation and, possibly, inadvertent water suppression. The patient’s right hip hardware (Fig. 6B) altered the precessional frequencies of fat and water to the point that the saturation pulse meant to affect fat has instead suppressed signal from the CSF in the lower lumbar spine and sacrum (Fig. 6A).
